On the very day that the table of contents for this book was being mapped out, there were major reverberations taking place in the American craft beer world. News that one of the oldest and most popular craft breweries in the U.S. had sold to a foreign investor broke, and social media was exploding.

Many people excoriated the owners of said brewery for having “sold out,” while from some other long-time craft beer consumers and observers, there was little more than a collective yawn and a shrug.

This wasn’t the first time a well-known and respected craft brewery was acquired by a major corporation, but this time it was the king of corporate nose-thumbing, Greg Koch, and his arrogant Stone Brewing Company (see Figure 16-1 featuring the Stone Brewing gargoyle). Koch had famously declared that he would never sell out to The Man, but that was long before his company went deep in debt.

Although the Stone Brewing buyout by the Japanese brewing company, Sapporo Holdings (for a mere $165 million), was a shock to many, it’s really just the latest of many mergers and buyouts that have taken place in the craft beer world over the past decade or so. Some caused seismic shock waves, and others were barely a blip on the radar screen.
